Fun activities to try when camping in North Devon

During your time camping in North Devon, you need to fill your time with fun activities. There are plenty of great things to do in North Devon, you just need to know where to look. If you are struggling to fill your schedule with fun, here are some of our pointers.

Darlington Crystal glass factory

The last UK glass factory that remains in service, Dartington Crystal factory is a brilliant place to visit. You can watch experts working at their craft as they make beautiful glass creations in the ancestral home of British glass making. Great fun for all the family, you can walk around the factory floor on your own self guided tour. There’s a lot to see and do for everyone.

Clovelly

Clovelly is an isolated and picturesque fishing village that was formerly owned by the Royal Family. To preserve its unique character, Clovelly has remained in private ownership since the Elizabethan era.

The town is separated from the hustle and bustle of daily life, due to it being located on the side of a cliff and no cars allowed in. The only method of transport within the village remains donkeys and sledges. The ancient fishing harbor is surrounded by a large quay, and as you move up the cliff there are cottages with floral gardens, hidden passageways known only to locals. It is hard to explain how enchanting it is, but we would highly recommend you visit so you can experience it for yourself.

The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway

Lynton and Lynmouth is a stunning seaside location, famed for its railway and brilliant views, and definitely a place to spend a fun day out. The area came to be known as ‘little Switzerland’ by the famous movement of romantic poets in the 19th century, and was a location many people went to retreat to and refuel their creative ambitions.

The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is the UK’s only fully water powered railway and a marvel of British engineering. Rising 500ft from the ground, taking a ride on the railway is an extremely memorable way to spend a day out. Alongside the actual railway, there is a brilliant seaside cafe that provides a wide selection of brilliant food and drink, where you can refuel after your day out

As a word of warning, the railway is only operational between February and November.

RHS Garden Rosemoor

If you are less interested in the coast, and would prefer a fun day out in the luscious green countryside, then visiting RHS Garden Rosemoor is for you.

Located in the Torridge Valley, RHS Rosemoor is a brilliant set of gardens to visit all year round. You can enjoy the scenic cherry tree blossoms in spring, the vibrant tropical gardens and its flowers in the summer, enchanting woods that are filled with browns and reds during the autumn, and greenery stretching to the end of the year in the Winter Garden.

There are a strictly limited number of pre-booked tickets available for each day, so make sure you book in advance if you are interested in visiting.
