If you are unaware, a destination wedding is one in which you get married somewhere other than where you reside. Although it’s quite common to hear of exotic or international venues to host such a special and life-changing event, it is not compulsory for your wedding to be out of the country to be considered a “destination” event. Provided you do not wed where you reside, your nuptials meet the very definition of destination.
It’s no surprise that destination weddings are so appealing, there is something to be said about traveling to lands away from home. With the availability of affordable flights, almost anywhere you want to go is only hours away. The world has become infinitely smaller than it was in years gone by. It would seem foolish to deny yourself the ability to become immersed in another culture; personal growth is born of new experiences and perspectives.
Outlandish Expense Rebuked
Not every destination needs to be outlandishly expensive and unattainable for your guests or your budgetary constraints. In fact, marrying away from your hometown, especially if you live in a major metropolitan area, can actually prove to be more cost-effective. Instead of paying the premium prices to have your event where venues and services are notably more expensive, you can instead choose a location in a more rural area and not sacrifice your ideal wedding for the sake of staying in budget.
On the other hand, if you do want to travel to a more exotic land abroad, you can save in the long run by combining your wedding and honeymoon. If you always daydreamed of your special day on a foreign beach and your reception donning your bride bikini, make it happen! Realize that not all your intended guests will have the means to attend your foreign affair, but that also means you have a smaller, more intimate gathering which also means less expense for you. However, if you do decide to bring more guests along, or even fly down with your friends and family, it might be prudent for you to check accommodation and private jet flight cost beforehand for the destination of your choice so that you are not taken aback!
Relaxed Norms and Expectations
An unexpected perk to having a destination wedding is the luxury of truly marching to the beat of your own drum. You need not worry about meeting the expectations of certain perceived norms. For example, if you never wanted to invest thousands in the intricate gown and flowing train, you don’t have to. Instead, you can do exactly what you feel comfortable with and not have to worry about and chatter of disapproval. You aren’t striving to meet social norms of elegance and luxury; you can celebrate your special day in the way you see fit and not concern yourself with criticisms.
Plan for Success
The most important part of any endeavor, to ensure success, is to plan. Figure a budget that you want to work with and stick to it. Don’t be afraid to get more than one quote and go with the most appropriate offer. Prioritize what you must have and what you are willing to compromise on.
When you have a main focus, the small details will fall into place. When working with a florist, for example, instead of planning on having a specific flower, choose instead, a floral color scheme. It will prove more cost-effective if there are less expensive flowers that create the setting you want instead of having a less than ideal set up with a specific bloom.
Variety is the spice of life, don’t sell yourself short by pigeonholing yourself to a specific flower. Shop around for your venue; some halls provide catering that will be more cost-effective than a luxurious venue that you have to find outside catering for.
Above all else, remember that this is your day and the memories you are creating are yours and yours alone.
